Blue Jay

Blue Jay

Keynote: The proper use of power.

Blue Jay is often thought of as a 'robber' and although it can have those tendencies it has other qualities that make it stand out positively.

(Webmasters note): When speaking of blue jays being 'robbers', I am reminded of my grandfather and his running feud with blue jays. He had a small stand of pecan trees and every year as the pecans would begin to ripen the feud began in earnest. When my grandfather would see the first jay among the pecan trees he would drop everything and come running into the house to grab his .22 rifle to shoot them. Of course the jays would watch all this and when he came storming back out with the gun they would fly off, so grandfather never killed one.

My grandmother was always afraid grandfather would shoot one of the grandkids so she finally hid his rifle. But that didn't stop him. He resorted to running into the kitchen and rattling around among the pots and pans until he found the big kettle. Then he would storm back outside and beat on the kettle with a spoon to scare the jays off. He would bang on that kettle so hard that he ended up putting many dents in it.

I always thought it was funny to watch grandfather fuming, yelling and banging that kettle and grandmother just shaking her head. The jays of course would simply fly to another tree close by and sit and scold my grandfather, and he would shake his fist and tell them 'next time!'.

Blue Jay (particularly as a totem) reflects lessons in using your own power properly; as well as not allowing yourself to be placed in a position in which power is used against you.

The word "jay" comes from the Latin "gaia" or "gaea" - Mother Earth. In Greek mythology the union of Mother Earth (Gaea) and Father Heaven (Uranus) resulted in the first creatures who had the appearance of life. This ability is reflected in the jay's ability to link heaven and earth; to access each for greater power. The black and white markings found on jay's wings reflect this same ability. The sky (blue) separates the Heavens (white) and the Earth (black). The blue jay as a totem can move between both heaven and earth and tap into the energies of both.

The crest on the jay's head is symbolic of higher knowledge that can be used when focused. It is a reminder that to wear the crown of true mastership requires dedication, responsibility and committed development in all things in the physical and spiritual.

Those with jay as a totem usually have a tremendous amount of ability, yet they can tend to be 'dabblers' in the psychic and metaphysical fields. They do not develop their ability any more than is necessary to get by. Yet they use that knowledge oftentimes to give the impression they know more than they really do. Jay is a reminder to follow through on all things - do not start something then leave it dangling while you fly off for the next thing that sparkles and catches your fancy.

Blue jay reflects that a time of greater resourcefulness and adaptability is about to unfold. There will be ample opportunities to develop and use your abilities. The jay does not usually migrate so use this as a reminder that there will be ample time to develop and use your energies to access new levels. It will stay around and work with you as long as you need it.

The blue jay is actually a member of the crow family and most crows have no fear. Crows and jay will group together and mob hawks and owls to drive them off. They will certainly let you know when either a hawk or owl is around for they will raise the alarm by a cacophony of sound. The jay is fearless and this can be of assistance to you to connect with the deepest mysteries of the earth and the greatest of the heavens.

The blue jay is an excellent mimic, with a sharp eye and voice. It is especially good at imitating the red-shouldered hawk. The old time naturalists thought that it derived pleasure from this activity. As with all members of this family, seeking pleasure, often at the expense of others can reflect an imbalance. For this reason some Native tribes consider Blue Jay as a trickster. Jay will sometimes show up in your life when this is happening in your own life.

Blue jays have a tremendous ability for survival with the least amount of effort. They reflect great talent. However, that talent must be developed and utilized properly. When jay shows up in your life it signals a time that you can begin to develop the innate royalty that is within you, or simply be a pretender to the throne. It all depends on you. The jay will teach you either way.
